Samsung’s software policy has gone through a rapid change over the past five years, adding 7 generations of OS upgrades in flagship phones, but a recent change in Android updates has created doubts among some Galaxy smartphone users.

In the wake of such a situation, a Galaxy S24 user reached Samsung customer support about the Android 15 and 16 rollout in the same year and how these two versions will impact his device’s 7 generations of software update policy.
The user took a screenshot of this conversation and posted it in the community, which reads.

“If Android 15 and Android 16 updates are released twice this year, the number of updates will be reduced accordingly. Please understand that this is a deduction of the number of updates based on the Android version update,” replied Samsung’s service representative.

Despite sharing the official response, some users still had doubts about the actual rollout promise. So, here’s a user-friendly clarification.

Official update policy

Samsung’s official policy is to provide 7 generations of OS upgrades and 7 years of security updates in premium phones such as the Galaxy S24 and S25 series.

The generational AKA major updates have no conditions, such as a timeline. Instead, it will be available after the launch of a new Android version, and count accordingly.

For example, the Galaxy S24 series will receive two OS updates in 2025, from its 7 total OS updates. However, if Google continues to release two Android versions in a single year, the phone will complete its OS upgrade cycle in 2028, rather than 7 whole years. So, OS generations are a number of rollouts and not years.

On the other hand, the scenario with security updates is different. The Galaxy S24 series will continue to receive security patches every month via OTA updates until 2032.

Google’s development shift

Android used to be a once-a-year software update, until 2024, when Google released Android 15 in October and announced Android 16 in the following month.

Meanwhile, Samsung users have been waiting for Android 15-based One UI 7, which was officially released in April 2025, and One UI 8 (Android 15) is expected in the Summer of the same year. That means, two major software updates will be released for Samsung phones this year.
