Amazon Kindle returns to India after year-long hiatus

After disappearing from its virtual shelves last year, the Amazon Kindle is back on sale in India with the launch of the newest Kindle Paperwhite, which is now the only model available for purchase.

The newest Kindle Paperwhite, which is the 6th generation Paperwhite and the 12th generation Kindle, launched in other markets late last year. It features a 7-inch 300PPI 16-level grayscale display and includes 16GB of internal storage. Amazon says it’s their fastest Kindle ever with 25% faster page turns along with a battery that can last up to 12 weeks. With an IPX8 rating, the device is also water-resistant.

For some unknown reason, Amazon suddenly removed all Kindle listings from its India store last year. The Kindle readers had been available for several years at that point and also came in multiple variants. The company never really offered any explanation for it, only stating that it was temporary but with no time frame for when they would be back.

The latest Paperwhite launch signals the end of this hiatus but with one difference from before. The Paperwhite now sits as the sole product in the company’s offerings in India whereas there are five models on sale in the US. The Paperwhite is also a premium offering, coming in at INR 16,999 whereas you could previously get a basic Kindle for half as much.

It’s possible the other models could make their way back to the India storefront in due time but at present, if you are a prospective Kindle buyer in India, expect to pay the big bucks.
