A ceasefire has been established between India and Pakistan. On Saturday evening, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri confirmed that India agreed to the ceasefire after Pakistan reached out. Earlier, U.S. President Donald Trump stated on social media that New Delhi and Islamabad had agreed to a “full and immediate” ceasefire.
The Foreign Secretary said that both sides agreed to the ceasefire starting from 5 PM on Saturday. During this period, there will be no fighting on the ground, nor will there be any attacks from the sea or air.
He further informed that Pakistan’s Director General of Military Operations (DGMO) called India’s DGMO at 3:45 PM today. During their conversation, the decision for a ceasefire was made. Both sides subsequently issued instructions at the ground level. The DGMOs of both countries are scheduled to speak again at 12 noon on May 12. Misri also stated that no decision has yet been taken regarding talks on any other issues at any other location.
Earlier, President Trump wrote on the social media platform ‘Truth Social’:
“After a long night of talks mediated by the United States, I am pleased to announce that India and Pakistan have agreed to a FULL AND IMMEDIATE CEASEFIRE. Congratulations to both countries on using Common Sense and Great Intelligence. Thank you for your attention to this matter!”
Just minutes after Trump’s post, Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar stated: “Pakistan and India have agreed to a ceasefire with immediate effect. Pakistan has always strived for peace and security in the region.”
Later, the US Secretary of State Marco Rubio tweeted, “Over the past 48 hours, @VP Vance and I have engaged with senior Indian and Pakistani officials, including Prime Ministers Narendra Modi and Shehbaz Sharif, External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, Chief of Army Staff Asim Munir, and National Security Advisors Ajit Doval and Asim Malik. I am pleased to announce the Governments of India and Pakistan have agreed to an immediate ceasefire and to start talks on a broad set of issues at a neutral site. We commend Prime Ministers Modi and Sharif on their wisdom, prudence, and statesmanship in choosing the path of peace.”
On April 22, terrorists killed 26 people in Pahalgam. About two weeks later, in a retaliatory move, India carried out strikes on nine terrorist hideouts in Pakistan. Since Wednesday, there had been shelling between the two countries.
